In Texas Holdem, the initial step is to get the game started, and for this the players put out a specific sum of money. ‘Posting the blinds’ is the commonly used term for this play. In the following step, the dealer shuffles the deck of cards and gives out two cards face down to all players. A normal deck of 52 cards is used. After the deal, there is the initial round of wagering. This sequence is often referred to as a "pre-flop".

After the first betting round, the first card of the deck is tossed aside. This thrown away card is referred to as the "burn card", and this is done to guarantee that there is no dishonestly. The next 3 cards are then dealt face up on the table. These cards are referred to as ‘the flop’. Now comes a 2nd round of betting, after which the dealer throws away a further card and turns over one more card onto the table. After this, participants can use the 6th card to create a 5card poker hand.

Another round of betting follows, and in a number of styles of games, here is where the bet amount doubles. There is another round of tossing aside a card, and a closing placing of a card face-up on the table. This is known as the "river". Gamblers can now employ any of the five cards on the table, or the 2 cards in their pocket, to create a 5card poker hand.

To wrap it up there is a last sequence of wagering. After that, all the players remaining start to display their hands. This is known as the "showdown". Obviously, the competitor who shows the highest hand is the winner. When competitors have even hands a splitting of the pot is used.
