Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these card games while playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he played extensive hours and lost most times. He earned some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on the game.
The real improvement in his game happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would frequently play against one another. Howard was able to access a number of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL holdem.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world ever. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and played cash games for the following decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
