Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he liked gambling on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in these card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and headed to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he played extensive hours and don’t win most times. He made some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He judged he could boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.
The definite improvement in his game happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly challenge one another. He was able to access some of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, he would hone his logical thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the greatest female players the poker arena has ever seen. He moved to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
